Confronted birds in a floral circle, samite
2018-01-06

L50cm, W14cm
On a ground with alternating blue and brown colours, two confronted birds inside a floral circle were woven with red and yellow wefts. The weave structure of this piece is typical Tang style samite, twill compound weave weft-faced on the front but warp-faced on the back, which was so called Zandanniji silk in Tang dynasty. Since this piece is dated from the 12th to 13th centuries with obvious Islamic style, it suggests central Asian weavers were still using the same technique. That is why Zantanlaji (Zandanniji) was still in production in the Yuan dynasty document.(ZF)
