Skirts like this red one are known as horse-face skirts due to the shape of the panels. Each of the two side panels has a rectangular front panel. This particular one in figured silk damask with ball-shaped patterns has a blue waist section of cotton material and embroidered face and bottom sections with bird and flower motifs worked with gold couching on blue ground. The entire skirt is densely pleated. (XY)
