The handbag is an important part in Western dress, functioning well both as containers and accessories. They could be classified into different types, as to functions: evening bag, handbag, purse, clutch bag, cosmetic bag, travel bag, briefcase, etc.; and they can also be made from different material such as leather, canvas, silk, metal, and so on. The handbag was born in 17th century, and from then on, has been popular for centuries, especially out of luxury brands and designers.

Based on the collection of China National Silk Museum, with more than 60 items, this exhibition is about to show different handbags in different types, functions, artistic features and their historical and cultural backgrounds, and to represent the magnificent world of handbags in 19th-20th centuries in Western world.
