The region of Central to Eastern Europe are considered as a crucial part of the Silk Road to connect Europe and Asia. It is said Chinese silk cropped up in Poland during the Middle age, Hungary started their sericulture from the twelfth century, Garments of Tartar in mongol-yuan period had been found in Bulgaria and Czech Republic and now owns huge collections of Chinese silk.
People believe that Central and Eastern Europe was the most important place of production of silk. At the middle
of the 20 century, sericulture was developed in Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia,Hungary and Serbia. Form the year of 2016, China National Silk Museum started to collect silk goods and samples which come from the area along the Silk Road, include some silk that was produced in Central and Eastern Europe, which become a highlight part of our collection.
The museum takes the benefit from the Culture Forum which happened in Hangzhou and hosted by the culture minister of Central and Eastern Europe. We invited Assadour Markarov PhD as our curator, who is a Bulgarian artist, curator and educator in China Academy of Art to curate this exhibition. During the year, he helped us to reach out a plenty of artists based in Central and Eastern Europe, and engaged them to create pieces of art over Chinese silk. This is how we present this fabulous exhibition to our audiences.
This is our first collaboration with Central and Eastern European artists, which can be seen as a continuation of the spirit of the Silk Road. It is a encouraging culture communication between China and all the countries within this region, also between people from those countries, from heart to heart. We look forward the success of this exhibition and expect to gain opportunities to work with more artists from Central and Eastern Europe.
